I just finished reading the most recent Arkady Renko book (Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith). I've followed Renko ever since Gorky Park more than thirty years ago and it was a pleasure to encounter him again.
I've heard some grumbling to the effect that Tatiana seemed to be phoned in but didn't find it to be so. I mean, it's a series for goodness' sake ... there's bound to be some recurring characters and themes.
Anyway, it was neither as dense nor as long as some of the other Renko books, but it told a good story with solid, interesting characters trying to live honorably in the new Russia.

Road Not Taken
Thursday evening was the start of our local library's semi-annual book sale. Thursday night is for members only. I am a member. I did not go. I did not go because I'm trying to stand fast against the tide of books washing over my bookshelves and submerging everything in my house except the cat's litter box.
The book sale continues through the weekend - Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I did not go yesterday, which was Friday. But it was not because I was standing fast - it was because I was busy.
Today is Saturday. Now, having had coffee and breakfast I'm faced with the necessity of standing fast without the aid of previously scheduled activities. I'm not at all certain I can do it. I will report back.
